How Chevron Boosts Nigerian Content Through Indigenous Participation
In its recent Corporate Responsibility Report, Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), said its main objective was to encourage the participation of indigenous companies in the oil and gas industry.
Chevron said it was doing this through the deliberate creation of business opportunities for Nigerian service providers and suppliers.
The company also disclosed it spent huge amount of money on content development in order to strengthen indigenous participation in the country’s petroleum industry in 2014.
Chevron explained that its philosophy on Local Content Development, LCD, and Nigerian Content Development, NCD, is to ensure compliance with the Nigerian Content Act.
The company further said that it is committed to supporting economic growth in Nigeria by building capacity in the nation’s petroleum industry, empowering Nigerian service providers and suppliers through human and business capacity development, local patronage, work scope reservation and fostering business partnerships.
This, it said, has helped Nigeria to build wealth from oil and gas proceeds, while also developing local commerce and industry.
The report identified a number of the local contractor beneficiaries that have successfully partnered with Chevron and developed capacity in the process. The list include BeneProjecti Nigeria Limited; Baklang Consultants Limited; Dataflex Nigeria Limited; Avidor Nigeria Limited; NUGA Nigeria Limited; Delta Afrik Engineering Limited; Cakasa Engineering Limited; NETCO; Dec Oil Engineering; and Gramen Petroserve; Dorman Long Engineering; and Dec-Kohasa Oil & Gas Limited.
The paper disclosed some companies that engaged in fabrication of offshore platform, jacket, main deck, cellar deck, auxiliary sump deck, boat landing, bridge, surge vessels, Jacket piles and pig traps (launcher and receiver) for Escravos Produced Water Disposal (EPWD) project.
Some others were also engaged in the supply of line pipes for Escravos Export System Project (EESP) and supply of flanges for Meren. One of the participants of the one-year Offshore Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) training under the Funiwa Gas Project 2014. Others engaged in the fabrication of topsides, jackets, piles and bridges for the Sonam Non-Associated Gas Well Platform construction training for 160 Nigerians on welding, fabrication and craft, supply of vessels for JV and Agbami operations.
The report also said that a total of 12 Nigerians commenced one year FEED training under the Funiwa Gas Project. The training which is being held at Delta Afrik/Hommaston facility in Lagos, focuses on engineering, project management, cost management and entrepreneurship and a host of others.
As regards welders’ training, 10 Nigerians completed a one-year training on the EPWD Project. The training is an initiative of Chevron in partnership with the Nigerian Content Development Monitoring Board.
